Compassion is ~ Rooted in Love

Updated: Feb 9, 2023

As Christian women Veterans and those on active duty, we believe in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We understand that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and He no longer wears a crown of thorns. The Scripture shows us that Jesus exemplified all of the attributes demonstrated by the Father to include compassion. If we feel sympathy toward others, then we also illustrate the characteristics of the Father and the Son!

Colossians 3:11-13

11 In Christ there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.

The Christian Life

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive.

We bring our Compassion design to light using God’s words about Himself in Exodus 34.

ExoduS 34:5 The LORD came down in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed his name, “the LORD.” 6 The LORD passed in front of him and proclaimed: The LORD—the LORD is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth, 7 maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But he will not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation.

Ladies, we must remember that God’s love, grace, faithfulness, mercy, and compassion do not pardon us if we remain in our iniquity! Consider this equation- We show compassion and God’s love through our actions and in truth!

Love in Action

1 John 3:17 If anyone has this world’s goods and sees a fellow believer in need but withholds compassion from him—how does God’s love reside in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.

So, what else does the Bible say about compassion? Let’s look at the article from Got Questions Ministry!

What does the Bible say about compassion? The short answer is:

The Hebrew and Greek words translated “compassion” in the Bible mean “to have mercy, to feel sympathy and to have pity.” We know that, according to the Bible, God is “a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness” (Psalm 86:15). Like all of God’s attributes, His compassion is infinite and eternal. His compassions never fail; they are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).
